Whenever you're riding your e-bike, and you notice that your gears are not changing smoothly, the issue could result from the derailleur. Most times, the derailleur is one of the e-bike adjustments to be done frequently. A derailleur that is out of alignment can cause shifting issues. Some riders may believe that a bike shop is the only solution when faced with a gear-shifting problem on an electric bike. However, you can resolve this problem and return the e-bike to normal with a few simple adjustments.
Typically, when you use the shifter while pedaling, the derailleur on the bike moves its chain from one gear to another. Whenever your e-bike's teeth or chains are dirty, they will affect the shifting directly. Also, you need to adjust your derailleur if you hear noise from the e-bike or the chains go off its freewheel teeth.
What is an e-bike Derailleur? The derailleur of an e-bike is the control that enables you to shift gears as you ride. It's usually at the rear of the e-bike's frame. A derailleur has a mounting bolt, and the other end has a movable arm that helps the bike chain. As you move the gear up or down, the derailleur will move the e-bike's chain to the proper position.
BeeCool Shimano 7-Speed Derailleur makes you change gears effortlessly and adapt to various terrains. It's lightweight and easy to maintain or change.
You would know your e-bike's derailleur needs to be adjusted when you hear a clicking noise. Also, you would notice that the gear moves to either below or above instead of the one you choose. When this happens, you should make the necessary corrections immediately.
There are several ways to adjust your derailleur.
First: check your electric bike
Before adjusting your derailleur, you must prepare your e-bike for the whole process. You would have to shut down your electric bike by pressing the power off button on your BeeCool bike. Then you proceed to remove its batteries, and this is for safety purposes. Afterward, get a cloth or smooth brush and clean dirt and other stains from it. Before you move to step 2, you will need a Philips screwdriver.
Second: look over your derailleur
Take a look at the derailleur, which is at the rear wheel. Check to determine if it sits exactly beneath the gear that the shift lever has selected. The chain should be on the largest when in first gear. The chain should be on the smallest in the seventh gear. You should take it to a professional service if the derailleur or the hanger is bent and doesn't hang directly under a specific piece of gear.
Third: do the simple adjustments
When the chain falls off the freewheel. Your e-bike's chain falling off the freewheel could result from the derailleur being too near or distant from the gears. You would have to locate and adjust the derailleur limit screw. If the chain happens to fall off the smallest teeth, turn the crank forward and change to the seventh gear. Tighten the higher set screw by turning it clockwise with a screwdriver. It would be best to continue pulling it until the smallest cog is directly below the chain on the upper pinch roller. Then you have to rotate the crank forward if the chain comes off the top gear. With your screwdriver, shift it into the first gear. Doing this tightens the lower limit screw as you turn it clockwise. It also lowers the derailleur to the flywheel. Lastly, turn the upper wheel and stop when the chain is in line with the bull gear. Change gears to check the alignment.
The chain jumps teeth or noise occurs during the shifting of gears. When this occurs, it indicates that the cable tension is too high. Turn the crank forward into the seventh to correct it. This process will shift the chain into a lesser gear and loosen the derailleur's barrel adjuster. Then, half-turn the barrel adjuster in a clockwise direction. Afterward, check to see if the gearshifts go effortlessly.
When the chain climbs the gear too slowly. The slow movement could imply that the derailleur is excessively slack, and to fix this, you need to accelerate and move to the seventh gear. To set and adjust the derailleur, tighten the barrel. Then check to see if it functions smoothly once more.
When the gear outer is short. If the cables are old, there may be friction and sluggish shifting, or it may need repairs. Cable replacement for your equipment should be once a year.
Your derailleur in good working condition will have a safe and enjoyable ride, and once you follow these steps above, you can adjust your e-bike's derailleur effectively. Shifting problems can also be brought on by other things. If the noise is still present, another problem is probably to blame, so you may need to look into other potential causes.
Depending on how well your bike performs, broken teeth and chains or a gluey derailleur are all possible causes of the noise. To prevent a breakdown on a lengthy trip, you must check that every component of your bike is in excellent working order for your safety. All you need to adjust your e-bike derailleur is a screwdriver. However, if you can't solve it, it's best to take it to your nearby bike shop for a check and if the parts needed are under warranty, you can contact BeeCool's official after-sale team to get them.
